Timing belts commonly known as cam belts are fitted to a vast number of vehicles, others are fitted with timing chains.
All timing belts have an expiry date either through elapsed time or mileage, manufacturers will give recommendations of when they should be replaced.

Timing chains usually last a lot long although poor engine oil servicing can cause a timing chains to stretch prematurely causing poor running/starting or in the worst-case major engine damage.
